Rákoš, Church of the Holy Trinity

The Roman Catholic Church of the Holy Trinity is an Early Gothic single-nave building from the middle of the 13th century. It has a Romanesque horseshoe-shaped apse and Romanesque slit windows, but the entrance portal already has a Gothic arch. The nave has a plain wooden painted ceiling from the late 17th century. In front of the church there is a Baroque brick belfry with a wooden superstructure.

Wall paintings (from the last third of the 14th century to the second half of the 15th century) cover the walls and vault of the presbytery and almost the entire north wall of the nave. It is a high-quality Italian fresco painting commissioned for the church by the local wealthy landowners, the Bubek family.

Holy Trinity - Head with three faces

A very well preserved seated figure of a blessing God with three faces and four eyes covers part of the triumphal arch of the church. This is a truly unusual way of depicting the Holy Trinity, which was later banned by the Council of Trent because of its striking resemblance to the pagan god Triglav. In addition to the depiction of the Holy Trinity, on the walls of the triumphal arch there are painted figures of saints, prophets, the parable of the ten virgins and a partially damaged figure of the Virgin Mary the Protectress.

The vault of the presbytery with a close-up of Christ in the mandorla surrounded by the symbols of the evangelists

The vault of the presbytery /in Western Christianity the space for the altar and the priest, usually separated by a triumphal arch from the nave of the church/ is covered with wall paintings from the last third of the 14th century to the 2nd half of the 15th century. The vault of the sanctuary depicts the blessing of the enthroned Christ in a mandorla with angels, the four Church Fathers and the symbols of the Evangelists (Matthew - angel, Mark - lion, Luke - bull and John - eagle). On the walls of the sanctuary are depictions of prophets, apostles and three Hungarian royal saints: St. Ladislaus, St. Stephen and St. Emeric.
